Information on the Use of Public Transport in Austria for Persons from Ukraine
The “Erstankunft Ukraine-Ticket” program, which provided a one-time free ticket for persons from Ukraine upon their first entry into Austria, expired on 31 December 2024.
Currently no nationwide discounts or free use of underground trains, trams, buses or trains are available for displaced persons from Ukraine.
Public transport in Vienna as in other cities in Austria includes underground trains, trams, buses and suburban railway services. The standard fare rules and tariffs of the respective transport operators apply to all passengers both local residents and foreign nationals.
Travel and Ticket Purchase
To use public transport in Austria it is necessary to purchase a valid ticket or travel pass:
- Single tickets, time-based tickets such as hourly or daily tickets, weekly or monthly passes in accordance with the applicable tariffs of the chosen transport operator
- Tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, ticket offices, mobile applications and official sales points of the transport operator

Certain discounts may be available for specific categories of passengers for example students or pensioners in accordance with the general rules of the respective transport operator. Such discounts are not specifically related to temporary protection status and apply to all eligible persons under the same general conditions.
