Just Arrived in Austria? What to Do in the First Days
To ensure that your stay in Austria is smooth and free from unnecessary difficulties, please follow the steps below:
- If You Do Not Have Accommodation — Contact a Reception Centre
If you do not have accommodation, your first step should be to contact a temporary reception centre. There is one 24-hour reception centre operating in Linz, where assistance with arranging temporary accommodation is available.
Please note: The number of places is limited.
- If You Have Accommodation — Register Your Address
If you are staying in private accommodation, you must register your residential address with the local authority (municipality or magistrate) within three days of moving in.

- Register with the Police
You must register with the police to obtain official confirmation of your right to stay in Austria. This registration is also required for further documentation and for applying for basic assistance.

- Apply for Basic Assistance
Apply for basic support (Grundversorgung) in order to receive accommodation, financial assistance, and health insurance. The application may be submitted through the relevant administrative authority or through organizations such as Caritas or Volkshilfe.
