Private and Organized Accommodation within the Basic Welfare Support System Grundversorgung

In Austria the basic welfare support system provides different forms of assistance for persons with temporary protection. In Vienna the amount of support may be up to 425 € per month for persons living in private accommodation or up to 812.50 € per month for persons living in organized accommodation. However it is important to understand that this is not simply rent assistance but different forms of housing support within the basic welfare system.

Private Accommodation individuelle Unterkunft

Private accommodation covers cases where persons live:

  • In their own or rented apartment
  • With friends or relatives
  • In a rented room under a contract

In this case the state does not provide housing but financial assistance is paid to help cover rent and housing maintenance costs. These payments help cover living expenses but are not a direct rent payment. Payments for persons living in private accommodation in Vienna may reach up to 425 € per month. The amount of support is determined after an assessment of need.

Organized Accommodation organisierte Unterkunft

Persons living in organized accommodation may be placed in facilities such as:

  • Accommodation centers
  • Dormitories
  • Housing provided by a federal province or partner organizations such as Caritas or Diakonie

Organized accommodation usually includes social support and meals. Payments for persons staying in organized accommodation in Vienna may reach up to 812.50 € per month but these funds are not paid directly to you. They are used to cover accommodation and maintenance costs.

Organized accommodation is a form of support provided by the state or its partners and includes more social services than simply providing living space.

Importance of the Type of Accommodation for Benefit Calculation

The type of accommodation has a significant impact on:

  • Maximum amount of support
Depending on whether you live in private or organized accommodation the amount of support will differ. In Vienna the maximum payments are up to 425 € per month for private accommodation and up to 812.50 € per month for organized accommodation.

  • Pension calculation procedure
If you receive a Ukrainian pension the type of accommodation affects how this pension is taken into account when calculating your benefits. For example for persons living in private accommodation the pension is considered under specific rules while for persons staying in organized accommodation a different approach may apply.
  • Method of payment
For persons living in organized accommodation funds are not paid directly to the individual account but are used to cover accommodation and maintenance costs. For persons living in private accommodation the assistance is paid in cash for independent use.
