Family Allowance and Childcare Allowance in Austria
Changes Effective from 1 November 2025
From 1 November 2025 changes enter into force concerning the rules for granting family benefits and childcare allowance to displaced persons from Ukraine residing in Austria under temporary protection.
Main Requirements for Applications After 01.11.2025
Persons who reapply for family benefits after this date must confirm one of the following conditions:
- Employment either employed work or self-employment
- Or registration with the Austrian Public Employment Service AMS as a job seeker
In certain cases confirmation of AMS registration is not required if it is replaced by other documents. This may apply to persons who:
- Have a medical certificate confirming incapacity for work
- Are studying
- Receive a pension from Ukraine
- Are on parental leave caring for a child up to two years of age
- Provide care for a relative in need of care at level 3 or higher
Family Allowance Familienbeihilfe
What Is It?
Family allowance Familienbeihilfe is a monthly payment granted to support families with children. The benefit is not income dependent and is available to all persons residing in Austria with children.
Benefit Amounts in 2025
Depending on the age of the child the amount of family allowance varies:
- Children up to 3 years — 138.40 € per month
- From 3 to 10 years — 148.00 € per month
- From 10 to 19 years — 171.80 € per month
- After 19 years if in education — 200.40 € per month
If there are several children in the family an additional supplement is granted for each additional child.
Every August a Schulstartgeld school start allowance in the amount of 121.40 € is automatically paid for children aged 6 to 15 years.
Age Limit for Payments
Entitlement to family allowance continues until the age of 24 if the child continues education.

Applications for family allowance are submitted via FinanzOnline or by post to Finanzamt Österreich the Austrian tax authority.
Childcare Allowance Kinderbetreuungsgeld
General Information
Childcare allowance Kinderbetreuungsgeld is granted to one parent after the birth of a child in order to partially compensate for loss of income during childcare.
Main Models of Childcare Allowance
- Flexible Account Model Kinderbetreuungsgeld Konto
- Duration of payments from 365 to 851 days
- The amount depends on the chosen duration
Short option 365 days — 33.88 € per day
Long option 851 days — 14.53 € per day
- Income Dependent Model Einkommensabhängiges Modell
- Payment of 80 percent of previous salary
- At least 182 days of uninterrupted employment in Austria before the birth of the child are required
- Duration of payments up to 365 days after birth
- Annual income limit 8,600 €
Consideration Within the Basic Welfare System
The amount of childcare allowance is considered as income when calculating basic welfare support Grundversorgung. This may affect the amount of assistance granted therefore it is recommended to consult a social worker before applying for benefits.
