Planning Permanent Departure from Austria? Information on Required Steps Before Leaving
In the event of permanently leaving the territory of Austria it is important to regularize your legal status in due time, notify the relevant authorities and terminate residence-related rights and obligations.
- Legal Grounds for Termination of the Right of Residence
Pursuant to § 4 para. 3 of the Regulation on Persons Displaced from Ukraine Vertriebenenverordnung the right of residence ceases if a person leaves the territory of Austria not merely for a short period.
This applies in particular to cases of:
- Transfer of the main place of residence to another country whether an EU Member State or a third country
- Permanent return to Ukraine
In such cases it is necessary to:
- Notify the regional office of the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum BFA responsible for your place of residence
- Return the displaced person identity card Ausweis für Vertriebene either in person or by post
- If You Receive Social Benefits
Before departure you must:
- Notify the basic welfare authority Grundversorgungsstelle and the competent social service in your federal province
- Terminate receipt of childcare allowance Kinderbetreuungsgeld
- Inform the authority responsible for payment of care allowance Pflegegeld
- Terminate receipt of family allowance Familienbeihilfe
- Deregister your place of residence Abmeldung des Wohnsitzes with the registration authority
- Deregister your child from kindergarten or school
- Termination of Contracts and Financial Matters
It is recommended to cancel or terminate existing contracts in advance including:
- Mobile phone services
- Travel passes and transport subscriptions for example Klimaticket
- Parking permits
- Memberships in sports clubs or fitness centers
- Household insurance
- Internet and television services
- Rental agreements and if applicable parking space or garage rental
It is also advisable to:
- Close bank accounts in Austrian banks either online or in person at a branch
- If You Are Employed
Before departure you must:
- Terminate your employment contract either by notice or by mutual agreement
- Apply for payment of funds from the employee severance fund Mitarbeitervorsorgekasse
- Obtain an employment reference Dienstzeugnis
